People at KOMMON

Editor-in-Chief
Fred McNulty
My name is Fred and I am an Editor-in-Chief at KOMMON. While I lived, studied, and worked in Seoul for a little under three years, I was the first student in my college’s history to major in East Asian Studies with a concentration in Korea. When I’m not working or studying Korean, I can be found exploring tasty restaurants around New York City

Chief Operating Officer
Sunny Um
My name is Sunny and I am Chief Operating Officer at KOMMON. I have lived for more than 20 years in Korea. I like listening to Black Pink and reading Korean webcomics after work. I always crack up at funny dog videos and bad puns.

Senior Operations and Logistics Manager
Yul Jeon
My name is Yul and I am a Senior Operations and Logistics Manager at KOMMON. I'm very interested in learning more about the trend of Generation Z in Korea. I like to go around looking for good restaurants in Seoul.

Senior Editor
Regine Armann
I stranded in Korea accidentally for work, many years ago, to do cross-race/cross-culture research at Korea University. Long before BTS or even Gangnam style, I am not sure I would have found Korea on a map back then, but in spite of walking around as lost as one can probably be, I somehow fell in love with this “impossible country” and never really managed to leave for good since then. Now I am back, finally trying to wrap my brain around the equally impossible Korean language, and happy to be part of the KOMMON team that helps other non-Koreans understand their adopted country a little better every week.

Staff Writer
Haram Lee
My name is Haram and I work as a Staff Writer at KOMMON. Running while listening to music is my favorite thing to do. I enjoy working at KOMMON because I can learn what non-Koreans want to know about Korea and I can tell the latest stories about them to all the first-timers here.

Staff Editor
Aleya Sharif
I’m Aleya and I’m an engineering PhD student based in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve been immersed in Korean culture and entertainment for over a decade, and being a part of KOMMON has helped me expand that knowledge further. Above all, it’s a pleasure connecting and learning from everyone on the team.

Graphic Design Producer
Ah-young Kim
Hello, I’m a biweekly illustrator for KOMMON & at other times a postgraduate student studying English Literature here in Seoul. Drawing was mostly a hobby before, and working on these illustrations has been a nice change of pace from the usual sleep-deprived and caffeine-addled postgraduate life—but also I must say KOMMON has helped me grow so much as an illustrator. I hope my art can be a nice little addition to these wonderfully written newsletters.

Senior Content Creator
Jessica Dharmaputri
Hi! My name is Jessica and I am born and raised in the Big Durian that is Jakarta. Currently, I’m a data cruncher by day and KOMMON’s content creator by night. In my free time, you can find me trying out new recipes in the kitchen, working on a new embroidery project or catching up on the next episode of a TV series. I believe that there is nothing more exciting than learning about different cultures and building connections with people from all over the world. Hence, I’m excited to be a part of KOMMON and hopefully expand your cultural horizons!

Social Media Curator

Strategic Alignment Manager
Andrew Kim

Editorial Assistant
Amal Kadir
My name is Amal and I work as the Editorial Assistant at KOMMON. Currently a graduate student in Ewha Womans University, I am originally from Brunei. Having lived in Korea on and off since 2017, one of the things that I find myself keep coming back to is the bustling dynamics of Seoul. I enjoyed discovering cute cafes in Seoul’s narrow alleyways with friends and my way of releasing stress is to go to a nearby archery cafe.

Staff Editor
Sulagna Banerjee
Heylo! I am Lanya/라냐 from India, currently based in Daejeon, Korea's very own Silicon Valley. I am a part-time Staff Editor here at KOMMON, and a full-time student majoring in Artificial Intelligence and dabbling in science journalism from time to time. I love Korea's modern, fast-paced, technology-and-innovation-obssessed lifestyle, which makes working on a newsletter on Korea such a delight. In my free time, I chase neighbourhood stray cats with my camera or go hiking in the local mountains.

Staff Researcher
Loren Sarenas
My name is Loren. I lived in Korea for 4 years while I was taking up my Master's Degree at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. I currently work as a Tax Analyst, supporting Korean clients, and as a Korean Language Instructor. Watching the Korean show Abnormal Summit is one of my favorite pastimes.

Social Media Manager
Melissa Mahanpour
My name is Melissa and I am the Social Media Manager for the Instagram account at KOMMON. I'm from New York and moved to South Korea over six years ago. I studied International Relations in my college years and I found South Korea to be an amazing country, rich in their own culture. I love inspiring others to be informed and build on their own conclusions to world events.
